Thinking of attending — no committment, just let us know so we can plan appropriately

You do not have to be a member of the family association to attend
but we welcome your support — see the OFA page on how to join

Planning is well underway with the local organizing committee; the next meeting will be in April at the college dining hall. Until then planning will continue with communicatioins by email and phone. If you live in the area, we need your help as there are many things to be done.

There will be special programs for children & teens as well as seminars for adults. Some currently being considered are: photography as a genealogical tool (Rochester is the home of George Eastman and Kodak), “Genealogy 101″ for those who are just starting the quest for their family heritage, visits to local Olmste(a)d sites, DNA as a genealogical tool and an update on what we have learned thus far about our Olmste(a)d family, the family in England and elsewhere, and discussion & research updates on various Olmste(a)d family lines.

Seminars and workshops may offered on these topics

  • How to document your appliction to join the DAR, SAR, or other hereditary society.
  • The history of the family name.
  • Olmste(a)ds in England before 1632.
  • DNA as a genealogical tool and what we are learning about our family lines.
  • Using the Internet and other tools for developing your genealogy.
  • Genealogy 101 — how and where to start learning of your family history.
  • Kids do genealogy too.
  • Making your own family crest — something special for our younger family members.
  • Castles and Camps — historic and modern Olmste(a)d retreats.
  • Experience the arrival of the “Orphan Train” with our younger families participating in this special program.

Two special 6-hour seminars are being planned for Thursday–each limited to 50 persons and will include bus transportation and luncheon.
1. Tour four historic Frederick Law Olmstead parks in Rochester with commentary by a park historian.
2. Photography — preserving old photos and documents with a visit to the George Eastman house and then “hands on” photography of people and places.
